An interesting aspect of the counselling process is that the counsellor does not give advice - advice is not necessary. You know your personal circumstances better than anyone and might just need a little help in becoming fully aware of them. You are in charge of the sessions and there is no better way to empower you than for you to retain responsibility for yourself.

The role of the counsellor is to listen with the aim of really understanding your experiencing. The counsellor will offer you a safe environment, accept you as you are, be absolutely genuine and offer you empathy. A job well done means that you know who you are, what you want, how to go about achieving it, and then doing it, even when the counselling relationship has long ended.
