About Counselling and Psychotherapy

Therapy offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. As your counsellor I will work at creating the right environment in which you are able to do this which will allow you to develop a greater understanding of your own thoughts, feelings and meanings. I am not there to analyse you or give advice, but instead to be along side you, support you and help you to explore and make sense of your own issues. This will enable you to find your own 'answers' and find your own way forward.

How will it make me feel?

It's a very personal process where sometimes it is necessary to talk about painful feelings or life events that have hurt you, so it can be emotionally draining, however I will make sure you don't become overwhelmed. Quite often I use relaxation techniques to "calm" the mind. In the long-run you should have a better understanding of yourself and be more resilient. You should stronger and able to cope better with life's ups and downs.

Will it work for me?

It works for a lot of people, especially if you are able to really open up and talk about things you've maybe never have spoken to anyone about. Talking about very personal and often painful things can sometimes be difficult but I will do my best to make sure you are safe and go at a pace that suits you. It can really give you clarity and help understand who you are and what you really need from life. It can be incredibly empowering.

How long does it take and how long does a session last for?

A lot can be achieved in six to eight weekly sessions but sometimes less than this can be enough. On the other hand it can sometimes last for months. It all depends on your individual situation. Sessions usually last fifty minutes to one hour however this can be adapted to your needs.

What is person centred therapy?

Devised by Carl Rogers, this therapy is based on the idea that a client enters into a relationship with a counsellor where the client is allowed to freely express any emotions and feelings. This enables the client to come to terms with the negative feelings that may have caused emotional problems, and develop personal skills. The objective is for the client to become able to see themselves as a person with power and freedom to change.
